Testimonial

“Before we found Dr. Merk, my then 4-year-old daughter wasn’t speaking to anyone. Not teachers, not friends, not even close family members. When someone talked to her, she would freeze and look away. In group settings, her frustration and anxiety would spike, and she’d cling to me as if I were the only safe place in the room. As a parent, it was heartbreaking to watch her want to connect but be completely unable to break through that wall.

Dr. Merk changed everything for our family.

She worked with my husband and I on psychoeducation to give us the tools to gradually expose C to speaking. But what truly set Dr. Merk apart was her understanding that selective mutism isn’t treated only in a therapist’s office. It’s treated everywhere a child lives, learns, and plays. She provided psychoeducation not only to us as parents but also to our extended family, friends, C’s teacher, and even her classmates. She helped the people in C’s world understand what selective mutism actually is, what it isn’t, and how to create environments where C felt safe enough to use her voice.

Slowly, we started seeing small wins: a whisper to Grandma, a one-word response to a cashier, and then spoken words to a class.

C continues to overcome selective mutism, and I credit Dr. Merk’s collaborative approach for getting us here. She helped equip an entire community to support our daughter. We are forever grateful.
